Java Verified

The Unified Testing Initiative (UTI) is a cooperative effort with the purpose of streamlining mobile Java application testing into one single program, to benefit the industry and the different interested parties in the ecosystem.

UTI was formed in 2004 to start a process of de-fragmentation that continues today. Prior to UTI, each network, each handset manufacturer and each application channel had their own standards and processes for applications. The UTI instead brings together existing schemes and industry experts in testing mobile applications to create a single set of tests.

These specific testing requirements relate to the operating characteristics of Java applications for mobile devices, are the basis of Java Verified, and are known as the Unified Testing Criteria.

The current members of this initiative are ACCESS, LG Electronics, Motorola, Nokia, Orange, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Sun Microsystems and Vodafone Group. In June 2009, UTI expanded to include a new testing program, Java Application Terminal Alignment Framework (JATAF), which adds handset testing to the initiative.

As a cooperative effort, the UTI is open to new members throughout the mobile Java ecosystem. Members may come from the ranks of mobile device manufacturers, wireless network operators, Java technology providers, publishers/developers, managed service providers, and other firms with interests in furthering the success of the mobile Java technology platform.

The goal of the UTI is to grow supply and demand for mobile Java applications by driving the development, promotion and distribution of high-quality mobile applications for the Java platform. This will be achieved by providing a comprehensive test battery - defined by mobile Java ecosystem constituents - against which mobile Java developers can test their applications.
